about

Chaos And Triviality was born out of two marathon recording sessions in Auckland and Melbourne. Writing, arranging and recording the music on the spot, RBR generated dozens of new compositions ranging from free form improvisation, to neo-surf, to psychedelic funk.

The process was organic and highly liberating. The results show three master musicians at the peak of their game in an informal but disciplined environment.

Michael Barker, Eddie Rayner and Brian Ritchie are RBR. Three musicians who are noted for their unorthodox and advanced approaches to playing, composing and performing.

Michael found himself with the strong urge to create new music without boundaries and gave the call to mates Eddie and Brian. The trio engaged in two marathon recording sessions in Auckland and Melbourne. Writing, arranging and recording the music on the spot, they generated dozens of new compositions ranging from free form improvisation, to neo-surf, to psychedelic funk.

The process was organic and highly liberating. The results show three master musicians at the peak of their game in an informal but disciplined environment.

Eddie Rayner knows all 88 keys of the piano on a first name basis as well as specializing in mindbending orchestrations for electronic keyboards. Although known primarily for his work with Split Enz, Eddie worked with Crowded House for several years, has been a sideman for the likes of Paul McCartney, and he has also done extensive film and television soundtrack work.

Michael Barker was for many years the driving force behind the John Butler Trio's groove. More than a drummer Michael is a virtuoso multi instrumentalist incorporating such sounds as marimba, tympani and hand percussion into his poly-rhythms.

Brian Ritchie is the man responsible for bringing the acoustic bass guitar to prominence as a lead instrument during his nearly 30 year tenure with Violent Femmes.

Eddie's musical talents and perspectives have been widely acknowledged since the early Split Enz releases. He has an uncanny knack of creating and incorporating unique sounds and arrangements, and there is nothing he enjoys more than collaborating and playing 'live', whether in the studio or on stage....for him, this is where the magic happens. ... more
